Bad times are here and it is time to clean the stables. My question is who goes and who stays? I have a single mom with no ambition. She comes in late and does her job, but only as much as I ask of her. Then I have a young hard-charger with significantly less seniority but the drive to get her early, come in on weekends and do all that is asked. I know the answer seems obvious, but letting the oldtimer go will have a significant eimpact on the staff. She is loved, although everyone knows she is only half in the game. The young 'un makes people nervous with her spunk. I am cool with that but you people will wonder how you flush a decade of service for someone fresh out of school.

I have been layed off and it was always the right thing. I moved on and got a betteer position. The old timer will find her path because she is obviously over you. Plus, she knows it's coming. They always do.
Do the right thing for you in the professional sense. Layoff the one that does the least for you and keep the one that does the most. This is not selfish or cold...if you dont do the rational thing the result is you put yourself and everyone else in your compnay at risk for a layoff to happen to you!
Man up and do the smart thing
