If I think that divorce is a certainty over the next few years, how do I get myself protected? How do I set myself up to win shared custody, how do I set myself up so that I do not lose 70% of my assets, which according to a lawyer friend of mine, uncle sam and the wife together will get that much.

Absolutely right. I didn't take enough time before things got really bad, and it cost me. If I had worked better for the year before I filed, I'd have a lot more $$$ today.
Talk to an attorney today. Protecting yourself doesn't mean you are giving up. It means you are being smart. ANd don't use your family attorney. Find a new guy (or, better yet, a woman) and get your shit together. It may take a year to get your ducks in a row.
